Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to adopt?- If you are single, you must be at least 25 years old and at least 10 years older than the child you wish to adopt. Married couples must also be at least 10 years older than the child they wish to adopt. Families need only enough money to cover their own living expenses. You do not have to own a home to adopt.
How old are the children that need homes?
- The agency places any age "Special Needs" child, but the greater need is for children six (6) years of age and older.
Where do the children come from?
- All of the children that are placed into permanent homes through The Giving Tree have been
removed from their biological homes due to severe abuse and/or neglect. They are in the custody
of the Department of Family and Children Services when the agency provides service and assistance.
What constitutes a "Special Needs" child?
- The definition of "Special Needs" child varies from state to state. Georgia defines a
"Special Needs" Child as: Any African-American child over the age of 1,
Any other race child over the age of 8,
Sibling groups who need to be placed together, or
Children with documented physical, mental or medical disabilities.
How many children has The Giving Tree found permanent homes for?
- The Giving Tree has placed over 160 children into permanent, loving and stable homes since 1999 and has set a goal of placing the 250th child by the end of 2006.
How long does it take for a child to be placed into my home?

The adoption process can take anywhere from 8 to 12 months and is largely determined by the time required to complete all records requirements, criminal background clearances and court processing.
What can I do to help?
